TAMMANY PARISH, LA.Sergeant Grant Candies was killed by suspects fleeing atraffic stop on Interstate 10 in Slidell.St. Tammany Parish Sheriff'sOffice has identified the sergeantkilled during a multi-parishcrash Sunday morning.“Sgt Candies was an asset tothe department,” Sheriff Smithsaid. “He was the kind of deputyevery agency hopes to have andsomeone his teammates routinelyreached out to for adviceand direction due to his vastknowledge of this job. His pathto law enforcement was one offate and devotion to his family, tohis community and to a callinggreater than himself. He will bemissed by all who knew him andall who worked alongside him.”Sergeant Grant Candies, 37,was assisting with a pursuit bydeploying a spike strip on Interstate10 near Oak Harbor exitwhen he was hit by the suspect'scar.The chase began on BrownswitchRoad, when a deputy attemptedto initiate a traffic stopand the driver drove off at a highrate of speed, refusing to stop.The pursuit ended when thesuspect's car crashed into a NewOrleans Police Unit in OrleansParish near I-10 and Crowder.Sgt. Candies started his careerwith St. Tammany Parish Sheriff'sOffice in March 2016 and waspromoted to sergeant in 2023.Prior to his promotion, Sgt.Candies was responsible forsaving the lives of two peopleand was named the 2023 STPSODeputy of the Year.He was also a Field TrainingOfficer who helped train newdeputies on his patrol shift.He was married with two children.“I ask our community to pleasepray for Sgt. Candies’ family aswell as his blue family – hiscoworkers and other members oflaw enforcement,” Sheriff Smithsaid. “Sgt.
