TEXAS EQUUSEARCH “That determination, that ‘we won’t stop until we bring closure for the family’ is what drives each and every volunteer at EquuSearch.” Since its inception in 2000, Texas EquuSearch has been involved in 1,860+ searches in approximately 42 states in the United States, Aruba, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. EquuSearch has over 2000+ volunteers located across Texas and other states. They have successfully reunited over 400 missing people to their families safe and sound. Law enforcement agencies far and wide will flat out tell you that many of those 400+ missing people would have been deceased if not for Tim Miller and his volunteers. Texas Equu- Search is also responsible for recovering the remains of 238 missing loved ones, bringing closure to so many families. Many of the 238 cases have resulted in criminal cases. At no time during any of the searches was evidence compromised by Texas EquuSearch. Therefore, the suspect(s) were brought to justice resulting in convictions. “Texas EquuSearch Mounted Search and Recovery Team was founded in August of 2000 with the purpose to provide volunteer horse mounted search and recovery for lost and missing persons. The team was originated in the North Galveston County area because of the high incidence of missing persons in the largely undeveloped area of south Harris and north Galveston Counties.” That’s on the organization’s website. The truth is, Tim Miller founded Texas EquuSearch when he saw the face of mother who was pleading with the public to please help her find her missing child. Tim didn’t want another mother or father to have to go through what he had experienced over the past 16 years with his daughter Laura. Texas EquuSearch’s very existence and purpose is dedicated to the memory of Laura Miller. Laura was abducted and murdered in north Galveston County in 1984. Tim will tell you that their organization is compassionate, dedicated and professional. “We believe that we can better ourselves by working together to help the community and people in need,” states their website. Many of the members are trained in various rescue and lifesaving skills such as CPR, advanced lifesaving skills and field craft. The members come from all walks of life, consisting of business owners, medics, firefighters, housewives, electricians, students, former FBI and law enforcement, current law enforcement, former and current U.S. Marshalls, Coast Guard and as well as all walks of military, both current and former. EquuSearch’s resources range from horse and rider teams to foot searchers and ATVs. They conduct water searches using boats, divers and sonar equipment. Additionally, the teams perform air searches using planes, helicopters and small drone airplanes with highly sophisticated cameras. They’ve also utilized infrared and night vision cameras, along with ground penetration units in some of the searches. Texas EquuSearch has more resources than most law enforcement agencies, which allows law enforcement to conduct their investigation, while Texas EquuSearch conducts organized searches. This has created a great working relationship between law enforcement and Texas EquuSearch. In fact, most law enforcement agencies across the nation now contact Texas EquuSearch to assist them in locating missing person cases in their area. EquuSearch is currently available to conduct searches nation and worldwide. EquuSearch is a nonprofit organization, which is funded solely by donations. 38 The BLUES POLICE MAGAZINE The BLUES POLICE MAGAZINE 39
