Some of the most incredible moments I have ever experienced in the role of Santa Clause was, with our special needs students. The light in their eyes when Santa Clause walked into the room or when he stepped of the Captain’s Seat of a firetruck was heartwarming. Seeing the light, which brilliantly shone from within those children so often overlooked or forgotten would truly restore one’s faith in humanity. I also was humbled and grateful for my years of being Santa at the World-Famous Ranch Hand Restaurant in Cleveland-Tarkington Prairie. Every year, Ms. Tara Stoneburger (recently passed away) and I, along with her stellar family and staff, orchestrate a sort of “Winter Wonderland” in the lobby of this very special place. As customers walked in, there was a “Winter Village” full of beautiful, collectable homes, churches, schools, fire stations and of course, people. And, just to the left of the door was, you guessed it, Santa. People would come from miles and miles around, they and their children all dressed up for a picture with Santa and a good old fashioned home cooked meal. It was as special as the story of Santa Clause himself. Not because of one person or thing. But, because of the genuine and sincere love behind the effort put forth. To simply bring families together for a special moment in time and a good, hot meal. And then there were the “special calls” for Santa. Those which parents, relatives and friends would call and present a special circumstance whereby they really needed Santa to somehow make an appearance. One such “special request” came from a family whose matriarch was in her final hours. Her only request, the only thing she wanted, was to see Santa…One. More. Time. Well, ole Santa and one of his officers rode as quickly as they could to the tiny home where this beautiful woman lay, in her final hours on this Earth. And Santa, quietly as he could, stood by her bed and held her hand. He listened to her faint voice and after a time, it was time. Santa quietly left the room and the matriarch quietly left to go home and to the waiting Angels above. Another “special request” came from the family of a young boy who was fighting and struggling with a terminal illness. With the help of the local fire department, Santa rode ride up to that families front door on a big red fire truck loaded with toys. Santa spent some time just listening to the young boy and all he had to say. All he dreamed, wanted, and hoped for. The time had come for ole Santa and the firefighters to get back onto the truck and head back from whence they had come. Sometime later, a report came from the family that young man did eventually lose his heroic, extremely brave battle with the disease he had been fighting for years. All that being said, every year I am so grateful for the opportunity to fulfill this special role. I sincerely pray I can continue this effort for many years to come. If for no other reason, than to simply see the light in a child’s eye and hear them say “I love you, Santa!” After all the horrible things I have seen in my role as a law enforcement officer and firefighter, believe me when I tell you, those few words and that brilliant beacon are truly, comforting to my very soul. And I am very humbly and sincerely grateful. Before I go, there’s one more thing to be said. None of what Santa has done or will ever do, would be possible without all the people who help Santa get to where he needs to go. And without question, to do whatever Santa needs to do. Without these beautiful, brilliant people….Santa just couldn’t do what he does. For them, I could never, ever convey enough gratitude.
