AROUND THE COUNTRYIRONDALE, AL.Lieutenant Mark Meadows was struck and killed by a motorist whiledirecting traffic at Grants Mill Road and Overton Road in Irondale.IRONDALE, AL. – An Alabamapolice lieutenant died on Mondayafter he was hit by a car whiledirecting traffic at a church.Irondale police Lt. Mark Meadows,60, was setting out conesat an intersection outside theChurch of the Highlands’ maincampus when he was hit by aman driving a Chevrolet Colorado,local outlet AL.com reported.The driver immediately stopped.The incident took place before7 a.m. on Monday as the church’spopular “21 Days of Prayer”event, which runs from Jan. 5 toJan. 25, was preparing to end forthe day.Meadows was taken to nearbyGrandview Medical Center,where he died from his injuries,according to Irondale police.Irondale Mayor James StewartJr., described Meadows as a“treasured member” of the city’sfamily for decades.“He was a man of few wordsbut always led by example andembodied the heart of a truepublic servant,” Stewart said ina statement. “Lt. Meadows willbe dearly missed by his brothersand sisters at the Irondale PoliceDepartment, as well as by all ofour City employees and citizens.We are comforted in knowingthat he is with his heavenlyfather, and we will continue tocover his family in prayer as theygrieve this great loss.”Meadows was an Army veteranand had worked in law enforcementfor decades when he waskilled. (Irondale Police Department/ Facebook)Church of the Highlands leadpastor Chris Hodges said Meadowshad worked with the churchsince its main campus at GrantsMill opened almost 18 years ago.In a statement to AL.com,Hodges said “our hearts areheavy beyond measure,” addingthat Meadows was consideredfamily.“All our thoughts and prayersare with his wife, daughter, son,family members, fellow officersand the many who loved him,”Hodges said. “Even in the mostdifficult and trying times, weknow our God will provide comfort,strength and reassurancebased on the promise of heaven.We as a church will do all wecan to care for his family.”Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey expressedcondolences to Meadows’loved ones and churchfamily following his death in aLT.
