AROUND THE COUNTRYHOUSTON, TX.Deputy Sheriff Jesus Vargas was shot and killed while serving awarrant at Stella Link Road north of Interstate 610 in Houston.BRAZORIA COUNTY, TX.— BrazoriaCounty Sheriff Bo Stallmanwas interviewed by TV stationKHOU about the death of one ofhis deputies a day prior.Deputy Jesus “Jesse” Vargaswas working with the U.S. Marshal’sGulf Coast Violent OffendersTask Force when he was shotwhile trying to serve a warrantfor Sean Christopher Davis’ arrest.The shooting marked the firstgunshot death of a law enforcementofficer nationwide in 2025.“There’s certainly a hole left inthe department after yesterday,”Stallman said.Vargas was a 17-year veteranwith the Brazoria County Sheriff’sOffice. He leaves behind a wifeand three daughters.The incident began around11:30 a.m. in a strip center offStella Link Road just inside theSouth Loop.According to authorities, Daviswas a passenger in a truckpulled over in the parking lot.When Vargas and his partnergot out and told Davis to get outof the car, Davis opened fire andran away from the scene. Vargas,who was shot in the head,was rushed to a Houston hospitalwhere he was later pronounceddead.Stallman described Vargas asa hero who protected the communityby apprehending fugitiveoffenders.“Jesse was a member, on behalfof our office, as part of theGulf Coast Violent Offender TaskForce. That’s what he did -- wasapprehending these violent offenders,”Stallman said. “DeputyJesse Vargas was a hero servingour community, keeping ourcommunity safe, by apprehendingfugitive offenders.”The initial shooting sparked amanhunt that lasted nearly sixhours.A Blue Alert was issued forDavis around 2:20 p.m., and thenaround 5 p.m., U.S. Marshal K-9Rocky alerted investigators to adumpster near the original shootingscene. The dog alerted to thedumpster several times. A U.S.Marshal then released Rocky intothe dumpster. That’s when HPDsaid Davis shot the dog at leasttwice.Deputies with the Marshal Servicereturned fire, shooting andkilling Davis in the dumpster. Adeputy was hit in the arm in theshootout. He’s expected to be OK.Investigators said the K-9 wasrushed to an awaiting helicopterand taken to an area vet. The dogis expected to recover from itsinjuries.DEPUTY JESUS VARGASStallman said the departmenthas received an outpouring ofsupport from the community aswell as law enforcement agenciesacross the state in the wakeof Vargas’ death.“You know, we’ve had peoplereach out to us from everywhere,”Stallman said. “Sendingtheir condolences and offeringany kind of assistance or resourcesthat they can.”Stallman urged the communityto keep the Vargas family and thelaw enforcement community intheir thoughts and prayers as theymourn the tragic loss.36 The BLUES - FEBRUARY ‘25
U.S. Marshal K-9 Rocky shot by suspecthiding in dumpster.HOUSTON, TX. — The U.S. MarshalK-9 shot by a wanted killeron Wednesday narrowly escapeddeath, according to a Houstonveterinarian who is treating K-9Rocky at Westbury Animal Hospital.Dr. Jeff Chalkley said the heroicK-9 was shot twice, through thenostril and the neck.“Narrowly missed his spine,which was pretty amazing,”Chalkley said. “God was there anddirected that bullet away from hisvital organs.”K-9 Rocky is credited with savinglives when he hunted downthe suspect who shot and killedDeputy Jesus Vargas and foundhim hiding in a dumpster. Healerted other officers and jumpedinto the dumpster where SeanChristopher Davis shot him twice.Other officers then killed Davisin a shootout behind the samestrip center where Deputy Vargaswas shot hours earlier.K-9 Rocky was loaded onto aTexas DPS helicopter and rushedto the animal hospital. Chalkleysaid the dog might not havesurvived if they hadn’t gotten himthere so quickly.K-9 Rocky might get to go homein two or three days. He’s alreadybeen up and walking, eating andpeeing and pooping, which are allgood signs.“He’s the luckiest dog I’ve seen,”Chalkley said. “I don’t you know ifyou call that luck or the hand ofGod, but that bullet, I mean couldhave ended his life instantly.”Rocky’s handler stayed by hisside all night and won’t leave thehospital until Rocky is released.Our KHOU 11 crew saw severalother officers stop by the hospitalto check on Rocky and his partner.“Everybody’s been supportinghim here and making sure youknow that he’s OK and the family,you know, he’s got a family withchildren and so this dog’s a partof the whole family, not just thetrainer,” Chief T. Michael O’Connorwith the U.S. Marshals Servicesaid. “You know, we’re, we’veCLICK TO WATCHgot the machoness in us, but yet.When it comes to children, innocentsand to animals, dogs, there’sa heartfelt feeling.”The veterinarians believe Rockywill make a full recovery and returnto duty and “catch more badguys and hopefully get rid of evilin the world.”“Just an athlete.
