AROUND THE COUNTRYCOVENTRY, VT.Border Patrol Agent David Maland was shot and killed during a trafficstop on Interstate 91 in Vermont near the Canadian Border.A United States border agentwas gunned down during atraffic stop in Vermont near theCanadian border, officials haveconfirmed.It happened around 3:15 p.m.Monday on Interstate 91 in Coventry,20 miles from the Northernborder, according to the Departmentof Homeland Security.The agent was identified asDavid C. Maland, a 13-year veteranwho was assigned to theNewport Vermont Border PatrolStation, federal law enforcementsources tell The New York Post.The FBI said in a statementthat one of the suspects waskilled and a second suspect wasinjured and taken into custody.There was no immediate informationon what prompted theshooting.Acting Secretary of HomelandSecurity Benjamine Huffman issueda statement saying that the“incident is being swiftly investigated.”“Today, January 20, a BorderPatrol agent assigned to the USBorder Patrol’s Swanton Sectorwas fatally shot in the line ofduty,” he wrote. “Every singleday, our Border Patrol agents putthemselves in harm’s way so thatAmericans and our homelandare safe and secure.
