He alsoescaped from federal prison in1979 while serving his sentencefor the two murders and had fiveyears tacked onto his sentence.Peltier, a prominent NativeAmerican activist before his arrest, has always proclaimed hisinnocence in the crime.“This commutation will enableMr. Peltier to spend his remainingdays in home confinementbut will not pardon him for hisunderlying crimes,” Biden wrotein a statement announcing themove. The commutation came inthe same release, issued whilenow-President Donald Trump’sinauguration ceremony was gettingunderway at the U.S. CapitolRotunda, that granted preemptivepardons to five of Biden’sfamily members, including hisbrother James Biden, a target ofcongressional Republicans.Former FBI Director ChristopherWray recently penneda letter to Biden, warning himagainst commuting Peltier’ssentence. The letter was writtenon Jan. 10, just days before Wrayand Biden left office.“Mr. President, I urge you in thestrongest terms possible: Do notpardon Leonard Peltier or cut hissentence short,” Wray wrote. “Itwould be shattering to the victims’loved ones and underminethe principles of justice and accountabilitythat our governmentshould represent.”On June 26, 1975, FBI agentsJack Coler and Ronald Williamswere killed by Peltier in ashootout while they were on thePine Ridge Reservation.“Peliter is a remorseless killer, who brutally murdered two ofour own–Special Agents JackColer and Ronald Williams,”Wray wrote. “Granting Peltierany relief from his conviction orsentence is wholly unjustifiedand would be an affront to therule of law.”Wray said Peliter fled to Canadaafter he “executed” the twoagents “at close range.” Peltierwas arrested in Alberta in 1976,before standing trial for themurders.46 The BLUES - FEBRUARY ‘25
