FROM THE EDITOR-AT-LARGEKeeping the public safeThe FBI defines terrorism as:“violent criminal acts committedby individuals and/or groupswho are inspired by or associatedwith designated foreign terroristorganizations or nations.” Ihave a more personal and simpledefinition: “A Terrorist is a psychoticPOS who doesn’t have theintestinal fortitude or skills to gotoe to toe with another person.”Anyways…with several specialevents coming to GalvestonIsland in Texas, I cannot helpbut think of all my friends inLaw Enforcement, Fire, and EMSthere. And the extreme challengesthey will face in the wake ofthe tragedy that just occurred inNew Orleans, on New Years Day.Mardi Gras is fast approaching. And for Galveston that is a hugedeal. Millions of people visitthe Island during the week longcelebration, with an economicimpact of 10-million dollars. The challenge is keeping allthose visitors safe and securewithout breaking the bank accountsof the city and the county.Don’t kid yourselves. This will bea daunting task given the worldwe live in today. Especially sincethe individual who perpetratedthe attack in New Orleans wasfrom the Houston/Harris Countyarea, local authorities have realconcerns about a copycat attack. It is foolish for anyone to thinkor say, “Oh that’ll never happenhere.” I can tell you anyone whothinks or says that doesn’t belongin the planning and logistic stagesof Safety and Security.I have no doubt that the ElectedOfficials of Galveston Island, aswell as local law enforcement, along with their federal partners, are working diligently to create asafety and security plan not onlyfor Mardi Gras, but the dozens ofother events like the Lone StarRally and Dickens on the Strand.Terrorism is nothing new. Itdoes however evolve and changethroughout cultures and variousgeographic locations around theworld. And remember, with theopen borders we’ve had thesepast four years, there are millionsof known and unknownterrorists roaming the streets ofAmerica. We must assume itsnot if, but when they will strikesomewhere on American soil. For those of us who work tocounter terrorism, it is incumbentupon us to find these illegalaliens and terrorists and removethem from our country beforethey have a chance to do usharm. Don’t be dismissive of theeven the smallest of details. Everytip or call from a concernedcitizen should be followed up.In planning events like thosein Galveston, or anywhere elsein America, Law enforcementneeds to have a Plan A and Band even a C and D. Along withanother Plan that has no letterdesignation because that Plan isyour OS Plan. It’s so dynamic itgets two letters! In other words, you can not have too many contingencyplans.Speaking of plans, I plan onspending as much time as possiblein Galveston at many of thoseevents and enjoy all GalvestonCounty and Galveston Islandhave to offer. The list of thingsto do and see there is just aboutendless. And the people…wellthe people watching is off thecharts. The word eclectic doesn’teven begin to cover it.With a cup of coffee in handjust sit and watch the crowds ofpeople in Galveston is an automaticmaker of hilarious andsometimes endearing memories.I will go there and feel safe becauseI know those in charge areworking to ensure all goes well. And I know they give everythingthey have to keep everyone safeall the while having a good oleGalveston kind of time!!!8 The BLUES - FEBRUARY ‘25
