JAN 2021 Blues Vol 37 No. 1

ONE OF MY MOST FAVORITE

ONE OF MY MOST FAVORITE CHAPLAIN’S CHRISTMAS EVE I had decided to do a Christmas Eve ride along after attending the graveyard briefing. That night, briefing was a festive atmosphere with a lot of joking, food, and light conversations about family and Christmas. The Sergeant (acting Lieutenant) asked me to say a Christmas word of encouragement and prayer. Well, you all know that although your Chaplains never push religion or their faith, that we are always ready to encourage you and pray when asked. Afterwards, I got into the car with “John” (not his real name) and as he checked out the car and prepared for our night, I reflected on the many times over the years I had worked with him both professionally and personally. I remembered that night that he had been shot and after visiting him and his wife at the hospital, sat in the hospital parking lot, crying to God that he would recover 100%. Funny, I have sat in the hospital parking lot more than I can count, praying God’s healing touch on our officers and their families. The night was thick with fog, as we slowly drove around his district. The radio was silent as we approached midnight. All the stores and restaurants were closed. We pulled over to drink our AM/PM coffee and wait for a call. John looked at me and said, “In all these years I have really never asked you some questions that probably sound dumb.” I looked at him and waited. Usually “John” calls me “Mindi” but this time he took a deep breath and asked, “Chaplain, do you really believe that Jesus died for everyone?” With confidence in God’s Word and what I know to believe is Truth I said, “Yes, and better than that “John,” God loved YOU so much that he gave His Son Jesus to die so that YOU can have eternal life.” That Christmas Eve, “John” asked a lot of “dumb” (not really, life changing, but certainly not “dumb”) questions. That Christmas Eve, “John” accepted God’s Christmas Present, Jesus. That following year, “John” was medically retired from a work injury that was unrepairable. “John’s choice was to either become bitter and blame God and walk away from his newfound faith OR make the choice to be better and live with a higher call on his life. His desire to help other officers who suffered from post trauma stress or involved in shootings began known to many departments. “John” developed a strong walk with God that has helped many officers in their darkest hours. This year our meetings have been online, but on this day, I unwrap the many Chaplain memories God has given me, this one is one of the ones I cherish most. Merry Christmas to my many officers out there that have looked beyond the trauma informed Chaplain who supports them, to see the Chaplain that prays daily for them. YOU ARE NOT ALONE! BOONE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE On behalf of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, we want to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support to our department on the loss of our K9 Loki. The Sheriff’s Office has received a tremendous number of requests to donate to our K9 program. There have also been several individuals and organizations accepting donations on behalf of our K9 program. We appreciate the good intentions, but please know the department may not be able to verify the legitimacy of every account. The Sheriff’s office is not soliciting donations. However, due to the overwhelming plea to donate, individuals may send donations directly to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office at 615 N. Main St. Belvidere, IL 61008. Please know 100% of the donations received on behalf of K9 Loki will go directly to our K9 program. Thank you again for your unbelievable amount of support. STOPPED CARING TODAY Today, I stopped caring about my fellow man. I stopped caring about my community, my neighbors, and those I serve. I stopped caring today because a once noble profession has become despised, hated, distrusted, and mostly unwanted. I stopped caring today because parents refuse to teach their kids right from wrong and blame us when they are caught breaking the law. I stopped caring today because parents tell their little kids to be good or “the police will take you away” embedding a fear from year one. Moms hate us in their schools because we frighten them and remind them of the evil that lurks in the world. They would rather we stay unseen, but close by if needed, but readily available to “fix their kid.” I stopped caring today because we work to keep our streets safe from mayhem in the form of reckless, drunk, high, or speeding drivers, only to be hated for it, yet hated even more because we didn’t catch the drunk before he killed someone they may know. Nevertheless, we are just another tool used by government to generate “revenue.” I stopped caring today because Liberals hate the police as we carry guns, scare kids, and take away their drugs. We always kill innocent people with unjust violence. We are called bullies for using a Taser during a fight, but are condemned further for not first tasing the guy who pulls a gun on us. And if we do have to shoot, we are asked “why didn’t you just shoot the gun out of their hand?” And when one of us is killed by the countless attacks that do happen (but are rarely reported in the mainstream media) the haters say, “Its just part of the job.” I stopped caring today because Conservatives hate us as we are “the Government.” We try to take away their guns, freedoms, and liberty at every turn. We represent a “Police State” where “jackbooted badge-wearing thugs” randomly attack innocent people without cause or concern for constitutional rights. We are Waco, Ruby Ridge, and Rodney King all rolled into one lone police officer stopping to help change an old lady’s tire. I stopped caring today as no one wants us around, but instantly demands answers, results, arrests, when a crime takes place. If a crime isn’t solved within the allocated 60 minutes it takes CSI on television, we are inept, incompetent, or covering something up. If we do get “lucky” it was just that and everyone with a Facebook account can post wonderful comments of how “they” would solve the case and how “we” are not nearly as clever. I stopped caring today because a video of a cop six states away, from a department that you never heard of, screws up and forgets his oath of honor, thus firing up an internet lynch-mob of cop haters even though 99% of us work twice as hard not to end up in the news and to still be “the good guys.” We are “militarized” because we wear body armor and kevlar helmets when shots are fired or rocks thrown at us and carry scary looking rifles even though everyone knows that they are easier to shoot and are more accurate than a handgun or a shotgun. I stopped caring today because the culture of today’s instantly connected youth is only there to take and never give back. To never accept responsibility for ones actions, but to blame everyone else instead of themselves. To ask “what is in it for me?” versus “what can I do for you?” To idolize gangsters, thugs, sexually promiscuous behavior, and criminals over hard work, dedication, and achievement. To argue that getting stoned should be a right, yet getting a job or an education is a hassle. To steal versus earn. To hate versus help. Yes, I stopped caring today. But tomorrow, I will put my uniform back on and I will care again. LT DANIEL FURSETH, DEFOR- EST, WISCONSIN POLICE “On Wednesday in Alabama, a Walker County Sheriff’s Office Deputy came across a man walking down the road with an oxygen tank and learned he is a Disabled American Veteran trying to walk/hitchhike from the Jasper area to Huntsville for a Dr. Appointment he was told he could not miss. With no way to get there, he said he started walking. The deputy acted quickly and escorted the Gulf War Veteran to the Cullman County line where a Cullman Sheriff Deputy picked him up. The deputy then transported him to the Morgan County Line where a Morgan County Sheriff Deputy took over and met a Madison County Sheriff Office Deputy in Huntsville who finished the trip and took the man to his appointment. After an overnight stay, we were happy to do it all again today..... in reverse to help get the man back home. We are thankful for our Veterans and were honored to play a small role in supporting this man who gave a great deal for our country!” ANONYMOUS 10 The BLUES POLICE MAGAZINE The BLUES POLICE MAGAZINE 11
