USMS UNITED STATES MARSHALS SERVICE fish stinks from the head” so I firmly believe that is where we need to start. Truth, logic, and common sense does not exist anymore and the horrendous agenda that some of the politicians are conveying to their constituents is outrageous. I am a huge proponent of training. I believe that you cannot get enough of it, especially in the world that I lived in when life-threatening decisions were made in a New York second. However, the old adage “he who hesitates is lost” certainly comes into play when these dedicated warriors are being questioned about every move they’re making and some of them are under a microscope making it very difficult to do their jobs soundly and effectively. When you hesitate and think about whether you’re going to get in some sort of trouble for doing what you are trained to do, that could result in a very fatal outcome. Community relations are very important and the relationships between law enforcement and community leaders is needed so the confidence can come back so that the men and women in uniform can continue to serve. I would convey to candidates that want to become law enforcement officers to have confidence and to believe in themselves, to trust their actions, and to train hard to be dedicated warriors. It is also important to know when to recognize when a colleague is not doing the right thing and advise that person that it’s the wrong approach and to also know that once you’re labeled it’s very difficult to get anyone’s confidence back. Positive press is extremely important! When law enforcement is called to any scene, you don’t get a second chance at a first impression.. act professional display your confidence and your willingness to listen and react appropriately. I’ve been involved in highlighted media cases from the DC snipers to the Boston bombers. The US Marshals Service gets utilized for a variety of different things. I was deployed to the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles for three weeks as well as Hurricane Katrina on a search and rescue mission for three weeks, which was devastating. I’ve chased terrorists, murderers, rapists, and arsonists across the globe resulting in numerous life-threatening situations. My approach was always de-escalation before using deadly force as a last resort. I instilled that into my subordinates even when I became the Commander of the largest fugitive task force of its kind in the world in New York and New Jersey, post 9/11. George Orwell once wrote “people sleep peaceably in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf”. I had the honor and privilege of working with these men and women for three decades, making a difference throughout our country and within the communities we serve. My television career started in 2008 when I was approached by two television producers in New York City. My first response was thank you so much but I do 66 The BLUES The BLUES 67
