USMS UNITED STATES MARSHALS SERVICE JOHN “BUCK” SMITH I began my U. S. Marshals Service career in 1983 as a Deputy U. S. Marshal assigned to the Northern District of Georgia (Atlanta). From 1987 to 1994 I was a member of the USMS Special Operations Group (SOG). From 1991 until 1993, I was detailed to the Atlanta area Metro Fugitive Squad as a team leader with the drug fugitive section. In 1993 I was promoted to Senior Inspector with the USMS headquarters enforcement section and assigned as the USMS coordinator for the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OC- DETF) Southeast Region. I held that position for a period of ten years. During my tenure with the USMS Investigative Operations, I participated in and managed many USMS fugitive programs and initiatives and coordinated the investigations and arrests of a number of USMS Fifteen Most Wanted and major case fugitives. In 2003, I was promoted to Chief Inspector/Task Force Commander of the newly formed Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force (SERFTF). In 2006, I was again promoted to Regional Field Chief overseeing all USMS Investigative Operations Division operations within the Southeast and Florida and later overseeing all Regional Fugitive Task Forces. From January 2009 through June 2009, I served as acting Chief Deputy in the Northern District of Georgia. In 2014 and 2015 I was, for a number of months, the Acting Deputy Assistant Director of Investigations, at USMS Headquarters. I retired in 2015 after 32 years of service as Chief of all Regional Task Forces. After retirement in 2016, I became a cast member with CBS’s “HUNTED” serving on Team “Alpha” as fugitive hunter, consultant, and subject matter expert in the areas of fugitive investigations, surveillance, tactics, and equipment. In 2017, I was a member of the DOJ’s Law Enforcement Development Program, International Criminal Investigations Training Assistance Program(ICITAP), Senior Tactical Advisor, completing an assignment as a law enforcement instructor in Kiev, Ukraine. I now currently serve as Training Coordinator with the Atlanta-Carolinas High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA ) Drug Task Force and conduct, facilitate, and manage law enforcement training. I continue to support law enforcement in all areas by developing and maintaining law enforcement relationships and providing quality training to law enforcement, first responders and military. The TV show “HUNTED” was a great opportunity and a lot of fun. Once I realized (after about a week) it wasn’t a “real” fugitive hunt, I was able to roll with it and accept the unreal aspects of “reality” TV. My partner and our team really worked well together and had a lot of fun and laughs. I still stay in touch with my partner Griff as well as many of the other cast John “Buck” Smith Chief Inspector, U.S. Marshals Service (Ret.) 70 The BLUES The BLUES 71 70 The BLUES The BLUES 71
