AROUND THE COUNTRY OAKLAND CNTY, MI. Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy Bradley Reckling was shot and killed while conducting surveillance on a stolen vehicle in Detroit. DETROIT (WILX) - The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of a deputy who was shot and killed in the line of duty Saturday night. Police said in a press release that the shooting happened just before 11 p.m. on June 22 on the north side of Detroit. Bradley J. Reckling, 30, and two other members of the Sheriff’s Office Auto Theft Unit were working undercover to find a Chevrolet Equinox that was stolen earlier in the day at Red Oaks Water Park in Madison Heights. Reckling and his colleagues traced the car to a location in Detroit. Reckling spotted the car, the vehicle suddenly stopped and at least one of the three suspects in the car got out and began shooting. Reckling was struck multiple times and was sent to the hospital where he later died. Police in the area were quickly informed Reckling had been shot, and Detroit Police and the Michigan State Police flooded the area and quickly set up a perimeter. Three suspects were arrested. Reckling was hired back in 2015 and honored multiple times by the sheriff’s office, including commendations for life-saving, meritorious and professional excellence. Deputy Mathew Morrision said, “Brad was a loving husband, father, and an amazing friend. He loved the outdoors. Was an amazing fisherman, loved to deer hunt, and enjoyed growing his farm and raising animals.” “This was a senseless murder and a terrible loss for our entire community,” said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald in a news release on Sunday. “It’s also another tragedy caused by gun violence, which continues to take a tremendous toll on our community.” Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter also released a statement saying, “I am heartbroken DEPUTY BRADLEY J. RECKLING to learn of the shooting death of one of our Oakland County Sheriff deputies. Please keep him, his loved ones, and county colleagues in your heart today. I’ve been in contact with Sheriff Bouchard to offer support to sheriff’s office employees during this difficult time.” This is still an ongoing investigation. News 10 will continue to provide updates. DON’T MISS THIS MONTH’S WAR STORY ON PAGE 154 44 The Blues - July ‘24
