FROM THE PUBLISHER’S DESK Politics is a Dirty Game Yes, running for any political office can be a downright dirty proposition. Just depends on how bad someone wants to win and how low they are willing to go to get what they want. This month we take a break from national politics and talk about the local sheriff’s race in Galveston, Texas. The current Sheriff, Henry Trochesset, is a good and decent man and has served the citizens of Galveston County for over 12 years as sheriff. In fact, Trochesset has devoted almost his entire adult life working at the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office beginning at the age of 19. Just recently he celebrated his 40th anniversary with the department. The BLUES interviewed Trochesset back in 2021 and he indicated he wasn’t going to seek a 4th term and would retire in January of 2025. The first candidate to announce his intentions to run for Galveston County Sheriff in 2024 was Jimmy Fullen. I’ve known Jimmy since the 90’s and he is a stand-up guy, a good friend, and a damn good cop. He’s the guy you want watching your six when all hell breaks loose. He admits, he’s old school ‘kick ass and take names’ kinda cop. But in 6 The Blues - July ‘24 a 2020’s new age kind of way. In other words, Fullen wants to run the thugs out of Galveston County and restore law and order. My kind of sheriff. And he not only earned the support and endorsement of The BLUES, but damn near every law enforcement official in Galveston County and beyond. From the minute he announced, he was the most likely candidate to win the primary and the election. By all accounts, Fullen is going to be the next Sheriff of Galveston County. Well, Fullen’s plan to ‘clean house’ at the Sheriff’s Office didn’t sit kindly with the old guard that Trochesset had assembled. Most knew that when Fullen took over, they would be following Trochesset out the door. Enter Ray Nolen, a major at the department who decided he liked working at the SO and rather than get kicked to the curb, he would run against Fullen. No big deal. The more the merrier. Nolen had only been a full time Galveston County employee for 4 years. Prior to that he was captain in the SO Reserves for about 15 years. Trochesset hired him in 2020 and he eventually was promoted to Major over patrol and investigations. Nolen was a quiet kind of guy that just went about doing his job. In other words, just the opposite of Fullen. Soon after Nolen jumped in the race, a former employee of the department Kenneth Williams, AKA Costa Loca, decided he would create a one-man anti-Jimmy Fullen campaign and the mudslinging began.
