2021 An Elite Agency Each year between five and eight million people visit Galveston Island and the Beach Patrol patrols the island’s 32 miles year-round with 15 full time employees. Over the past two years, Davis and his staff have worked over 378,369 preventative actions, responded to 3,335 calls for medical, rescued 209 swimmers, reunited 148 lost persons, worked 21 drownings, had 7,783 enforcement actions, 10,324 tourist contacts and made 88,215 water safety contacts. Today, the Galveston Island Beach Patrol is recognized as one of the most professional and proactive lifeguard agencies in the United States and their mission remains the same as it was 40 years ago. Protect the 5-8 million people who visit Galveston beaches each year, respond to aquatic emergencies 24/7/365, educate the public about water and beach safety, and be a good community partner. But their highest priority is to make sure every visitor to the beach gets home safely. 74 The BLUES POLICE MAGAZINE The BLUES POLICE MAGAZINE 75
