FROM THE SENIOR EDITOR’S DESK yrs. Come on Down Life as a Law Enforcement Officer has never been one that well, makes you rich. It can make you famous in a bad way, really quickly. Some, lose their friends and even their family, when they make the decision to enter Law Enforcement as a profession. Going all the way back to the days of Rodney King (and there have been many others, unfortunately) our profession, has endured much criticism and disparaging content from mainstream and social media as well as, form just the general public. Now, couple such an adverse outlook for the personnel in our profession and combine that with mediocre pay, marginal benefits, poor (at times, by some, certainly not all) leadership and supervision, along with aging or misused equipment, it becomes much clearer that “Why would anyone want to ever become a Law Enforcement Officer?” I cannot attest as to the “Why” for some. I can only attest to my “Why”. No, it is not the four prior generations of my family who were all in Law Enforcement. I wanted to make Texas and whatever community I served in, a safer place for families to live, work, love and play. I wanted to make a place where children were safe from predators. I wanted to make a place where women who were victims of violence, could come to the Police and be protected from ever being hurt again. This world, it is full of the wicked and violent. There are those who would rather do harm to others, than not. And commit that violence for no other reason than, they can. Only those who, like me and like you who wear a badge, can stop them. Only the few who dare to wear the badge, stand freely upon a line which separates good from evil. We do this not for the pay or to seek some kind of reward or recognition. We do it because if not us, then who. And that is readily and quickly becomes, no one. Not every day has to bring about an arrest. Not every day do we have to “solve” some major crime. In fact, most days, we provide direction to the lost. Return kids who have run away from home. Find and return lost property and of course, write lots and lots of reports. Reports ranging from those who “DEMAND” a report for a barking dog to “someone just stole my brand-new CHIEF REX EVANS truck! And yes, I left it running at the gas pump while I ran inside for a drink and a snack.” (it’s like cool…here’s your case number and here’s your sign, too) I’ll wrap it up with this, Police Academy’s are running short of new Cadets. I get it. No one really wants to do this thankless job anymore. With that, those who do seek employment in their field, are to be taken seriously. For they are fewer in numbers than ever before. One caveat, they need to have the heart to do the job. You can be a “Robot” and just “do” this job or…. You can be a human being with a decent heart and potentially save a life or two along the way. The choice is yours and yours alone. I can only tell you; we’ve got openings. Come on down if you dare to care!!! Over 1 Million Views in February Alone! 8 The BLUES The BLUES 9
