In Person Events Vary

In Person Events Vary Across the Country National Police Week May 9-15 National Police Week occurs every May, and in 2021 we will be commemorating it with virtual events that can be viewed from anywhere in the world. From May 9–15, the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum will deliver programs to keep current officers safe and healthy, as well as ceremonies to honor those fallen officers whose names have been recently added to the Memorial. Be sure to mark your calendar for the 33rd Annual Candlelight Vigil, happening virtually on Thursday, May 13 at 8:00 p.m. (Eastern). In-person events are planned for October 13-17, 2021 in Washington, DC to offer the same respect, honor, remembrance, and community support as National Police Week, while allowing law enforcement, survivors, and citizens to gather and pay tribute those who gave their lives in the line of duty. In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. National Police Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America’s law enforcement community. The principal organizers of National Police Week include: • National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF), which produces the annual Candlelight Vigil. Phone: 202.737.3400 | vigil@nleomf.org • Fraternal Order of Police/ Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary (FOP/FOPA), which organize the Peace Officers Memorial Day Service at the U.S. Capitol. www. policeweek.org • Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.), which holds the National Police Survivors’ Conference. Phone: (573) 346-4911 | cops@nationalcops.org • The Memorial Fund conducts a variety of programs and events each year to honor those law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice and to increase public support for the law enforcement profession. • The Memorial Fund (along with Concerns of Police Survivors, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the FOP Auxiliary) is a principal organizer of National Police Week, the annual tribute to law enforcement service and sacrifice that is held each May in Washington, DC. They host both formal ceremonies such as the annual Candlelight Vigil each May 13 and impromptu, individual tributes to American fallen heroes of law enforcement. • The Memorial hosts several other commemorative events throughout the year such as the annual Wreath Laying ceremony to mark the Memorial’s dedication on October 15, 1991 and various special events for honored guests and notable anniversary dates, such as September 11th. • The Memorial Fund also operates various programs designed to raise awareness of law enforcement service and sacrifice, promote officer safety, and reduce injuries and fatalities. Our Drive Safely campaign encourages motorists to be careful around law enforcement officers on our roadways, where the majority of officers are killed each year. Memorial license plates in several states carry the distinctive Rose & Shield logo, reminding motorists of the sacrifice officers make for our safety and protection. • We encourage everyone to get involved in the Memorial Fund’s program and events, as a way to show your support for the brave men and women of law enforcement. • Interested in Holding an Event at the Memorial?
