AROUND THE COUNTRY MONTGOMERY, AL. Montgomery Sheriff’s Deputy Jermyius Young succumbed to injuries he received in a on-duty crash two-days prior. MONTGOMERY, AL. - A Montgomery sheriff’s deputy who was critically injured in an on-duty crash Wednesday has died from his injuries, Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham confirmed late Friday night. Deputy Jermyius Young, 21, succumbed to his injuries while being treated at UAB Hospital in Birmingham Friday evening. “It is with great sadness and regret that Sheriff Derrick Cunningham announces the passing of Deputy Sheriff Jermyius Young, who was involved in a motor vehicle accident earlier this week. Deputy Young passed away this evening at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, surrounded by his loving family. Deputy Young was a fine law enforcement officer. He was loyal, unselfish, and efficient. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office wishes to thank the firefighters/medics of the South Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Department, Haynes Ambulance, medical personnel at Baptist South Hospital and UAB Hospital for their care of Deputy Young. Young crashed his patrol vehicle around 7 p.m. Wednesday, 28 The Blues - May ‘24 according to investigators with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, which is handling the investigation. The deputy was initially taken to Baptist Medical Center South before being transferred to UAB. ALEA investigators said the single-vehicle crash happened in the 4500 block of Hobbie Road, located in south Montgomery County, though the cause remains under investigation. Cunningham said in an interview Thursday he’d gotten the call he never wants to answer Wednesday and went to the hospital to be with the deputy and his family. “And I turned around and look, and when you see all of his coworkers there, people leaving homes, some of the people that graduated Academy with him, they’re standing there with us,” the sheriff explained. “I mean, so this is a hard time for us in law enforcement, especially when you have an incident such as this, and you know that person is in critical condition. Man is speechless. Only thing we can do is pray.” Montgomery County Commission Chairman Doug Singleton shared a statement: DEPUTY JERMYIUS YOUNG “On behalf of the Montgomery County Commission we express our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Deputy Jermyius Young’s family on the tragic passing of such a courageous young man. His bravery and devotion to serving and protecting Montgomery County will always be remembered. Deputy Young was a true hero who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our community. Thank you to all the emergency personnel, police and armed guards who put their lives at risk for us, the general public. Your dedication in the line of duty is truly courageous and we are immeasurably indebted to you.” Young had been with the sheriff’s office since he was 18.
