May 2024. BLUES Vol. 40 No. 5 with Special Memorial Edition included Fallen Officers from 2023

FROM THE EDITOR-AT-LARGE

FROM THE EDITOR-AT-LARGE More than just a job. Fifty years is a mighty long time. Some would say: “That’s a half a Century!’ And they’d be right! A whole lot of good times and bad times can happen in that time span. Family life can change. Work can change. Friends can come and go. Our health can even get better or worse. One fella I know, Chief of Splendora, a Texas Police Department, Chief Wally Weighat, is one of the rare Law Enforcement Officers to reach the milestone of 50 years in Public Service. You read that right. Ole Wally has been a cop for more than half a century. And he’s had one hell of a run. I was just sitting around doing the math on all this. Do you know how many calls for service that comes to? How about phone calls? Return messages, E-Mails (when those came along in his career) and meetings? Meetings and oh yeah, more meetings. Let’s plan on having a few more meetings….ugggghhhhh. Then there’s all the people he met along the way. Think of all the cops he’s known. All the family and friends who’ve come and gone. The good, the bad and the ugly of it all. The hilarious and the tragic, all combined in a set of memories that could never really be truly quantified by mere numbers or words. 8 The Blues - May ‘24 Now ole Wally wouldn’t ever tell anyone this, but I will. There’s many a cop out there today who owe their careers to him. Cops who’ve had some hard times like most do. But they deserved that “Second Chance” and he gave it to them. Most never squandered those opportunities. They became stellar cops who truly made a difference for every community they’ve served. I cannot begin to think I’ll make fifty years. Heck, I’m a little over 35 years now and I’m ready for my afternoon nap. Not this guy. He keeps on humming along like a well-timed Harley engine. Which by the way, he still rides! Yes sir, ole Wally is one of those fellas that makes us all wonder “how is he still going like that?” Good people and good cops are mighty hard to find these days. Good Chiefs are even harder to come by. I assure you; they are not a dime a dozen. Chief Wally Weighat is not only one of the good ones, but he’s also the absolute best. A true friend to those he knows as well as those he doesn’t. He’ s one of those folks who may be a Chief but is also a great human being. Lastly and on a very personal level. There are few people like Wally Weighat, who have taken the time to listen to me, helped me, and did whatever they could for me. He was at times a true Godsend, an Angel on Earth. I am forever grateful for our friendship. Both professional and personal. My only regret would be I could I never repay the man for all he’s done for me and so many others. Chief Wally Weighat, a true Gentleman, Lawman, Family man and Friend. Happy Fifty years, buddy! God bless.
