GUEST COMENTARYPat DroneyNATIONAL POLICE ASSOCIATIONAsks AG Bondi to open an investigation into New Mexico AG overpolitically-motivated prosecution of police officer.LAS CRUCES, NM- Law EnforcementToday has been one of theleading media outlets reporting onthe case of Las Cruces police officerBrad Lunsford, who was foundguilty in the death of a man whoseized his partner’s taser and whomLunsford shot and killed in defenseof his and his partner’s life. We haveoutlined the decision of New MexicoAttorney General Raul Torrezto insert himself in the case andforce Lunsford’s prosecution, andthe series of questionable decisionsby Torrez and by the trial judge thatwe believe have deprived Lunsfordof his rights. Now, the NationalPolice Association (NPA) is askingAttorney General Pam Bondi to conducta federal civil rights investigationinto Torrez. In a press release dated April 16,the NPA, a non-profit organizationdedicated to promoting the interestsof law enforcement officers, formally requested that the Departmentof Justice open an investigationinto Torrez “over his politicallycharged prosecution of Las CrucesPolice Officer Brad Lunsford.”The release explained the circumstancessurrounding the event thathas changed Lunsford’s life. The Reader’s Digest version isthat Lunsford responded to a theftin-progresscall on Aug. 2, 2022.During the course of the investigation, the suspect, Presley Eze,“violently resisted arrest, knocked24 The BLUES - MAY ‘25Officer Lunsford’s partner to theground, and seized his department-issuedTaser. Forced with thethreat of serious harm or death tohimself and others, Officer Lunsforddischarged his firearm to neutralizethe danger. Investigations concludedthat Lunsford acted appropriatelyand within department guidelines.”According to Law EnforcementToday’s assessment of Las Crucesdepartment policy, New Mexicopolice training guidelines, and NewMexico state law, Officer Lunsfordacted within the scope of his trainingand applicable law. Despitethat, Torrez, a George Soros-fundedstooge, indicted Lunsford for voluntarymanslaughter. The NPA's request for a federalinvestigation was prompted by theperceived political nature of Torrez'sprosecution of Lunsford, whichthey believe was not based on themerits of the case but on a broaderanti-police sentiment. They notedthat, according to statistics, therehave been fifty-three (53) similarincidents to the one involvingLunsford. At the same time, prosecutorsdeclined to prosecute in forty-two(42) of them. Moreover, onlyone of those incidents that wereprosecuted resulted in a convictionof the officer, in that case underfederal civil rights statutes. When Torrez had Lunsford indicted,he issued the following statement:Our office is committed to upholdingthe principles of justice andaccountability. It is our duty to ensurethat law enforcement officersare held to the highest standards, that their actions are transparentlyexamined, and that any miscon-
