AROUND THE COUNTRYCOLUMBIA CNTY, GA.Columbia County Deputies Brandon Sikes and Gavin White wereboth shot during an attempted traffic stop on Interstate 20.44 The BLUES - MAY ‘25DEPUTY BRANDON SIKESCOLUMBIA COUNTY, GA. - Onedeputy is dead and another is incritical condition after a trafficstop near Augusta led to ashooting. One of those deputies, BrandonSikes, was killed on site. DeputyGavin White was shot in theface. Sheriff Whittle said Whiteis alive, but left in critical condition.Deputy White has undergonesurgery on his sinus and oralcavities. Whittle said White iscommunicative and in controlof his limbs, but he likely has along road of recovery ahead ofhim."I can assure you it's going tobe a tough road for him. But, heis very upbeat and incrediblystrong, and we're hoping that hecomes back to full duty in recordtime," Sheriff Whittle said.Unfortunately, we're going tohave to have a funeral for a verybrave officer who has been withus since 2018," Whittle said, while appearing to grow emotional."He was one of our crimesuppression officers. His nameis Brandon Sikes. He is survivedby his wife, Amber, who is alsoan employee here of the sheriff'soffice. And it's going to be a difficulttime for the sheriff's office, but we're going to get throughthis. We just ask that everyonekeeps us in their thoughts andprayers."Officials say the driver of amotor home, later identifiedas James Blake Montgomery, was initially "cooperative" and"non-threatening" when he wasfirst approached on I-20 nearExit 196 Saturday night. The deputies who stoppedhim were there to inform himthey were serving a temporaryprotective order for a domesticviolence case with his wife,Columbia County Sheriff ClayDEPUTY GAVIN WHITEWhittle explained during a newsconference Sunday afternoon. At first, it appeared Montgomeryunderstood it was a simplestop and that he would be allowedto leave freely afterward. But, as the three officers walkedback to their patrol car, SheriffWhittle said Montgomery pulledout a 9mm AR Pistol that hadbeen converted into a fully-automaticweapon. He opened fire, striking two of them.Multiple agencies – includingthe U.S. Marshals Service, theGeorgia State Patrol and twobomb squads – reported to thescene after Montgomery report-

edly retreated to the motor homeand led them into a standoff. The responding officers useddrones to scope out the scene. That's when they thought theyspotted bomb materials insidethe vehicle. They later determinedthose items were pipebombs and other paraphernalia– including one that was riggedwith a remote switch. Therewere also a number of guns,"numerous magazines" and boxesof additional ammo. The officers worked for hoursto find a way to safely enter themotor home and disable theweapons.During the confrontation, Montgomeryattempted to drive away, but veered off the roadway intocable barriers. He was founddead inside. There's still not a lot knownabout Montgomery and what hisintentions were with the weaponsfound in his vehicle.Sheriff Whittle said he ran asteroid operation where he wasselling illegal drugs. That operationmay be connected to anotherset of suspicious items foundin the motor home."We found some … jars – Idon't really know how to describethat other than to tellyou they're clear jars with pipescoming out of them. There'ssome type of liquid in them,we do not know what that isat this time. We don't knowwhether that may be some typeof bomb-making material, orwhether it may be some type ofdrug paraphernalia."The BLUES - MAY ‘25 45
