AROUND THE COUNTRYDALLAS, TX.New Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux takes over asthe 31st chief of the nation's 9th largest city.DALLAS, TX. – On April 11, DallasCity Manager Kimberly BizorTolbert named Daniel Comeauxas the Dallas Police Department’snext Chief of Police, effectiveWednesday, April 23.Wednesday was the first day forChief Daniel Comeaux to wearthe Dallas Police Departmentuniform.He was hired as the department'stop cop following severaldecades on the federal side oflaw enforcement, most recentlyas the special agent in charge ofthe DEA field office in Houston.Comeaux was sworn in by theCity Manager and began the daywith interviews with the localnews media who began pepperinghim with questions about heintended to solve the mandateto hire 900 new officers and thehorrible response times Dallashas racked up lately.Typical of the MS Media to expecta new police chief to haveall the answers on day one. Going back to where Istarted as full circle feels really,really good," he said.What’s the biggest challenge,do you think, coming in dayone?"Look, day one, I want to figureout how we can get more officershere. The residents want moreofficers. The council wants moreofficers. And I can assure you thatthe officers want more officers.So we’re going to really workhard to get more," he said.Last November, voters approveda mandate to increase the numberof police officers in the departmentto 4,000. Currently, DPDhas 3,100.In February, the Dallas CityCouncil agreed on hiring 300 additionalofficers in the next fiscalyear.The current climate that we’rein. How can you ensure thatpeople in certain pockets ofthis community are comfortablecoming forward to officersabout crimes without fear ofthem possibly not being in thiscountry?"We need to go back to someof the old-school things thatpolice used to do, which is beingin the communities, letting thecommunities know that we’re apart of them also. And when thathappens, I think it will also helpus reduce crime. Because if theyfeel like they can actually call ortext an officer, it’s going to help.It’s going to help the entire community.It’s also going to help thepolice department," Comeauxsaid.Talk about how you plan tomanage the relationship withthe men and women in uniform,but also with city hall?"Look, the bottom line for me isI’m just going to do what’s right.Whatever I think is right, that’swhat I’m gonna do.
