AROUND THE COUNTRYBRADENTON, FL.Suspected drunk driver crashes head-on into Manatee CountySheriff's Deputy's patrol car, causing it to roll over.By Michael Moore Jr.,The Bradenton HeraldBRADENTON, FL. — A ManateeCounty deputy’s patrol car rolledover late Sunday night when asuspected drunk driver veered intooncoming traffic and hit the vehiclehead-on, the sheriff’s office said.The sheriff’s office said the deputywas on routine patrol around11:45 p.m. and was turning into theparking lot of the agency’s OperationsCenter at US 301 Blvd. W.,Bradenton, when a pickup truckveered into the southbound lanesand struck his patrol car, causing itto flip over.According to a news release,nearby deputies helped the deputywith the overturned vehicle. Thecrash knocked him unconsciousand he was later treated at a localhospital for minor cuts.A video of the Manatee CountySheriff’s Office Operations Centerparking lot appeared to capture thecrash. In footage posted to socialmedia Tuesday afternoon, a pickuptruck can be seen plowing into apatrol car.Body camera video showed theinside of the deputy’s overturnedvehicle at the time of the crash.As an airbag deployed, the deputyradioed to dispatch that there hadbeen an accident.Footage from another deputy’sbody camera showed him running50 The BLUES - MAY ‘25to the scene and helping the deputyout of the vehicle with assistancefrom a second deputy.“We’ve got you, we’ve got you.You alright?” one of them said. Thedeputy responded that he was.“Do you remember what happened?”they asked.“Yeah, they crossed over themedian and hit me head-on,” thedeputy said.Later footage showed deputiesbreaking the window of the pickuptruck and ordering the driver to getout.“What do you want me to do?”the man asked.“Get out of the car, that’s what wewant you to do,” a deputy replied.“I’m good,” the driver appeared tosay before deputies repeatedly toldhim to turn around and placed himin handcuffs.“No, you’re drunk,” one deputysaid.Investigators said they identifiedthe pickup truck driver as 47-yearoldWilliam Thomas . Detectivessaid Thomas showed signs of impairment,including a strong smellof alcohol, and initially refused toperform sobriety exercises.Deputies took Thomas to thehospital for evaluation, the sheriff’soffice said. After he was released,they brought him to the ManateeCounty Jail . He agreed to take abreath test, which the sheriff’s officesaid showed blood alcohol levelsof 0.279 and 0.268, more than threetimes the legal limit.Thomas is charged with drivingunder the influence, causing propertydamage or injury, according tothe sheriff’s office.
