FROM THE PUBLISHER’S DESKWe Honor the Fallen6 The BLUES - MAY ‘25For the past five years, wehave dedicated our May Issueto honoring our brothers andsisters in Blue that have madethe ultimate sacrifice. It’s alwaysan emotional roller coaster aswe place photo after photo in aspecial Memorial Edition as werecall the details of their deathfrom the previous year.One by one, memories comeflooding back reminding usof the painful day we learnedthat yet another officer has losttheir life protecting someonethey didn’t even know. A familydisturbance that went horriblywrong. Worked a traffic accidentand hit by yet anotherdrunk driver who should havenever been on the road. Or justsomeone who choose to kill acop because they didn’t want togo to jail. Whatever the reason,someone lost a son, a daughter,a wife, a husband, a mom or adad and their world was turnedupside down.Officially, National PoliceWeek was established in 1962after President John F. Kennedysigned a proclamation designatingMay 15 as Peace OfficersMemorial Day. The week surroundingthat date has sincebecome a time to honor fallenlaw enforcement officers andsupport the loved ones they leftbehind.The week is organized in partnershipwith organizations suchas the National Law EnforcementOfficers Memorial Fund(NLEOMF), the Concerns of PoliceSurvivors (C.O.P.S.) and the FraternalOrder of Police (FOP).But for many officers, attendingNational Police Week is a deeplypersonal experience.It’s a chance to honor fallencolleagues, stand shoulder-to-shoulderwith fellowofficers and reflect on the legacyand meaning of the badge.Events like the Candlelight Vigiland Memorial Service providea space for both solemn remembranceand mutual support— especially for those visitingthe National Law EnforcementOfficers Memorial, where newnames are etched each year.Officers also have the opportunityto attend wellness-focusedevents, training sessions and receptionsthat foster professionaldevelopment and peer connection.The purpose of National PoliceWeek is to honor and rememberlaw enforcement officers whohave died in the line of duty. Theweek is grounded in solemn remembrancebut also serves as atime to support surviving familymembers, recognize the serviceof current officers, and educatethe public about the dangers andresponsibilities that come withwearing the badge.While the formal ceremoniestake place in Washington,D.C., departments and communitiesacross the country holdtheir own events to pay tribute.Whether it’s through a candlelightvigil, a roll call for thefallen or lowering the flag tohalf-staff, the goal is the same:to never forget the sacrificemade by the men and womenwho gave their lives in service toothers.I invite you to turn to page 229and look at each photo of thesefallen souls. Say a prayer fortheir loved ones and their brothersand sisters in Blue they leftbehind. If by chance one of theFallen is your family member,know that their memory will notbe forgotten and will always beremembered.“Blessed are the peacemakers,for they shall be called the childrenof God.”
