GUEST COMENTARY Rex & Michael Always take the high road. Sheriff’s Candidate Jimmy Fullen stands tall despite all the negative noise. As Nov. 5th/Election Day 2024 draws closer, in fact early voting has already begun, one can’t help but despise all the negative campaign ads and endless road signs. The mudslinging, name calling, false statements, threats and even acts of violence, that has plagued the 2024 Election Cycle. Even in our backyard, Galveston County has not been spared from all the election turmoil. For the first time in perhaps 25 years, the Sheriff’s Race has taken an awful, terrible turn. The mudslinging and trash talking from a small group of people grew into a fever pitch of lies, filth, disrespect, and dishonor. They even resorted to harassing innocent people who were associated with or related to one candidate, that candidate being Jimmy Fullen. Fullen is a Republican, vying for the position of Galveston County Sheriff. For the past year, Fullen has endured a seemingly endless barrage of personal attacks orchestrated by a group of individuals in Galveston County. This group launched attacks not only against Fullen, but went after friends, family and anyone who endorsed him. But through it all, Fullen never once engaged with them even when one deranged individual, claiming to a be a “honorably retired deputy” got in his face at a polling location. Fullen always sought the high road and refused to engage in mudslinging and negative ads. Jimmy never slung one drop of mud back at those who threw it by the barrels at him. Fullen acted the way we expect the head law enforcement official of a county to act, ignore the noise and continue to do the job at hand. He stuck to his values and adhered to the conduct expected of a professional Texas Peace Officer, the professionalism you want and expect from the Sheriff of Galveston County. Galveston, Texas is one of the oldest and most historic places in Texas. It’s rich and powerful history has stood like a shining beacon of light on the darkest of nights. People from all over the world have come to Galveston Island and Galveston County, for varying reasons. But regardless of their purpose for visiting the County, they did so with the mindset they would be safe during their stay. For over 186 years, the amazing men and women of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office have served the citizens of this ever-growing county. They serve and protect the inter-coastal waterways, communities, schools, neighborhoods, businesses and industry that comprise the Greater Galveston Community. Galveston County deserves a steadfast leader as their Sheriff. Jimmy Fullen has the experience and knowledge to lead the Galveston County SO into the future. His commitment to the Galveston County Community and helping his neighbors lead a better life, has spanned dozens of years. His years of public service show he is a proven leader and one the citizens can depend on day in and day out. The people who live, work, and visit Galveston County, want a Sheriff they can depend on and one who isn’t rattled by the rhetoric of a few unhinged individ- 12 The Blues - November ‘24
uals. They want a man that will stand proud and stay the course, despite all the noise surrounding him. Fullen is that man and he will be the next sheriff of Galveston County. Actions are louder than words and come election day, those that created all the noise will see the better man prevail and they can crawl back under the rocks they slithered from in the first place. I, along with our founder and LETTERS publisher Michael Barron (a former Sergeant from the Galveston County) ask all Galveston County Residents to please vote for Jimmy Fullen on November 5, 2024, and elect him as the next Sheriff of Galveston County. GALVESTON TRAGEDY There are a lot of hurting, broken hearts in Galveston, Texas this morning. The tiniest of lives, always touch so many people in their short time here. From the young man and his mother who found her, to the 9-1-1 Operator and Dispatcher, to the Officers, Firefighters and Medics...Yesterday is a day they’ll never be able to unsee. My heart hurts for all those so deeply affected by this terrible tragedy. I wish I could somehow explain such losses. One thing I’ve learned in my lengthy career though is you can’t. Some of the brightest, most beautiful and brilliant Angels ever sent to us were the youngest, smallest and most innocent of us all. And in the midst of their loss, many people whom they’ve never met nor knew, come together in the following days, months and years to remember the life so shortly lived. No matter whom they may be or whatever walk of life they lead, those who remember such tiny Angels understand just how deeply and profoundly children touch so many lives. This little Angel, just as all those who came before her and sadly, who’ll come afterwards, deserve to be remembered. They deserve to have their name and their life, remembered. Hanna Yonko, seventeen months wasn’t a long life. But what a difference you made to so many in such a short a time. May you and your short beautiful life, never be forgotten... REX EVANS, THE BLUES I can never understand how someone can kill their own child. I just can’t wrap my head around it at all. In my 35 years on the street, I have seen this same scenario play out time and time again. Many times, it’s always the stepparent, boyfriend or some other relative that’s involved. They are so strung out on drugs they have no idea what the hell they are even doing or who they are hurting. Afterwards they have no remorse and act like it’s no big deal. Monsters is what they area. Pure evil. The death sentence is not enough punishment for these horrible, horrible individuals. R. SMITH, RETIRED HPD TRUE BLUE READER I have been a reader of The Blues since its inception in 1984. I must admit I have not always been a fan of its publisher Michael Barron or his opinions and views on various subjects. But I will say this on his behalf. Despite a sheriff that absolutely hated him and threatened to fire him, he stayed the course and didn’t back down. He always backed his fellow officers and told their story even when he was told not to. And today, who would have known way back then, that 40 years later the Blues would still be around and according to Barron and FOX News, is the largest police magazine in the world. Gotta give Barron credit, he has staying power and continues to fight for what’s right. And supporting TRUMP has made me a fan for life. GOD bless you and your staff. T.
