AROUND THE COUNTRY NAMAKAN LAKE, MN. Park Ranger Kevin Grossheim drowned when his National Park Service boat capsized near Birch Cove Island on Namakan Lake. NAMAKAN, LAKE, MN. – A law enforcement park ranger died Sunday after a boat capsized on Namakan Lake during a rescue mission in northern Minnesota. Kevin Grossheim, 55, was responding to a morning distress call from a civilian vessel near Birch Cove Island in Voyageurs National Park. He brought the visitors, a family of three, onto his boat, but it overturned due to high winds and rough waters, according to a National Park Service news release. The family swam to safety, but Grossheim went missing. His body was recovered from the lake hours later at 3:20 p.m., according to the news release. “Kevin was much loved by all and always known to go above and beyond,” Voyageurs National Park Superintendent Bob De- Gross said in the news release. “He will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to his wife and their loved ones.” According to the National Park Service, Voyageurs has over 500 islands and 84,000 acres of water, including four large lakes and 26 smaller, interior lakes. Grossheim worked at the park for over 20 years, volunteered RANGER KEVIN GROSSHEIM with a local fire department and served as a motorboat operator certification course instructor.
