AROUND THE COUNTRYSIKESTON, MS.Police Officer Henry Franklin was shot and killed while serving a warrant withhis tactical team on County Road 408 in Mississippi County.By Emma BusseyA Missouri police officer waskilled while assisting in a mutualaid operation in MississippiCounty, according to officials.Officer Henry Franklin, 41, wasfatally shot on Oct. 6, whilehelping the Mississippi CountySheriff’s Office serve a warrantat a residence, per the SikestonDepartment of Public Safety(SDPS).The Missouri State HighwayPatrol reported that the warrantwas for Nathan B. Peters, 36,who was wanted in connectionwith a homicide that occurredearlier that day.In a statement released on theSDPS Facebook page, the departmentsaid Franklin, a memberof the SDPS Tactical Team,had responded as part of amutual aid request to locate andapprehend Peters.Authorities allege Peters barricadedhimself inside the resi-dence and opened fire on officersshortly after 7:35 p.m. and thatFranklin was struck by gunfireduring the exchange.The Missouri State HighwayPatrol’s Troop C SWAT Team waslater called to assist.When law enforcement enteredthe home around 12:35a.m. Tuesday, Peters was founddeceased from an apparentself-inflicted gunshot wound.Franklin had been with theSDPS since June 2013, and hadpreviously served in the ArmyNational Guard.He was also well knownthroughout the community asthe handler for K-9 Odin, his loyalpartner in service."Our department has sufferedan unimaginable loss," SDPSDirector James McMillen saidin the Facebook post. "OfficerFranklin was not only a dedicatedpublic servant but also ahusband, father, son, and brother.We ask that you keep Franklin’sOFFICER HENRY FRANKLINfamily and our department inyour prayers as we navigate thisdifficult time."Franklin was born and raisedin Charleston, Missouri.
