AROUND THE COUNTRYCANFIELD, OH.Trooper Nicholas Cayton was struck and killed by the driver of a Mack truckon the northbound lane of Route 11in Canfield, Ohio.By Cliff Pinckardcleveland.comCANFIELD, Ohio — A StateHighway Patrol trooper waskilled Thursday when his cruiserwas struck by a semi while hewas assisting a disabled tractor-traileron an Ohio highway.The patrol announced in anews release that Trooper NicholasCayton, 40, was assisting adisabled tractor-trailer on Ohio11 south of U.S. 224 in Canfieldwhen the crash occurred.“Today, the patrol lost amember of our family,” PatrolSuperintendent Col. CharlesJones said in a statement. “Thisis a tragedy for the Ohio StateHighway Patrol and the OhioDepartment of Public Safety.Our prayers go out to the Caytonfamily during this difficult time.”The patrol tells WKYC Channel3 that Cayton responded to thecall of a disabled tractor-trailerjust before noon. The 65-yearolddriver told Cayton he had hitsome debris in the road.Cayton was sitting in his cruiserwith the emergency lightson when it was hit from behindby a 2007 Mack Granite, WKYCreports. The impact pushed thecruiser forward, causing it to hitthe tractor-trailer’s driver, whowas standing beside his vehicle.Cayton was pronounced deadat the scene, WKYC reports. “Inservice and sacrifice, TrooperCayton honored the badge andfulfilled his sacred oath to thecommunity,” Ohio Attorney GeneralDave Yost said in a statement.“My deepest condolencesare with the family, friends andcolleagues of this fallen hero.”Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine hasordered U.S. and state flags beflown at half-staff on all publicbuildings and grounds throughoutMahoning County, the Statehouse,the Vern Riffe Center andTROOPER NICHOLAS CAYTONthe Rhodes State Office Toweruntil sunset on the day of Cayton’sfuneral.The driver of the tractor-trailerwas flown to a hospital fortreatment but no informationwas released on his condition.The 35-year-old driver of theMack Granite was not injured.The crash remains under investigation.40 The BLUES NOVEMBER ‘25
