AROUND THE COUNTRYSAN BERNARDINO, CA.Deputy Sheriff Andrew Nunez was shot and killed near a residence inRancho Cucamonga on Wednesday, October 27th.By Clara HarterLos Angeles TimesSAN BERNARDINO, CA. — A personsuspected of fatally shootinga San Bernardino County sheriff’sdeputy was deliberately knockedoff of his motorcycle by anotherdeputy while he was leading authoritieson a high-speed pursuiton the 210 Freeway in Upland.The deputy who was killedMonday was identified as AndrewNunez, a six-year employeeof the department. He leavesbehind a 2-year-old daughterand a pregnant wife, accordingto Sheriff Shannon Dicus. Thesuspect, who has not been identified,is in stable condition at anarea hospital.“We’re embedded in sorrow.Unfortunately for our department,this has happened waytoo often,” Dicus said at a Mondayafternoon news conference.“We’re going to do our very bestto do the most important thingat this point, and that’s to makesure that we bring the suspectto justice and take good care ofthat family.”Nunez was shot while respondingto call of an armedman threatening a woman inRancho Cucamonga. The incidentoccurred in the 12300 blockof Hollyhock Drive at 12:37 p.m.,according to the Sheriff’s Department.He was airlifted to ArrowheadRegional Medical Centerin Colton, where he was laterpronounced dead.San Bernardino County Dist.Atty. Jason Anderson said hisoffice planned to file chargeswithin the next two days.Charges under consideration includemurder of a police officerand domestic violence. Andersonemphasized, however, thatthis is a fluid situation and muchinformation still needs to bereviewed.Around 1:20 p.m. Monday ,authorities began pursuing thefleeing suspect as he barreleddown the 210 Freeway.Dicus said the suspect wastraveling at speeds in excess of150 mph and sometimes almost200 mph. “You can imagine whatthat could have done to unsuspectingmotorists on our freeway,”he said.At one point, the suspect nearlycollided with a pursuing CaliforniaHighway Patrol motorcycleofficer, according to helicopterDEPUTY ANDREW NUNEZfootage captured by KTLA.At 1:35 p.m., an off-duty sheriff’sdeputy put himself on dutyand conducted a legal intervention,hitting the suspect andcausing the motorcycle to crash,Dicus said.Helicopter footage showsthe man colliding with a blacksedan while traveling 70 milesper hour, soaring over the handlebarsand landing on his back.The injured suspect was loadedonto a stretcher and transportedfrom the crash site on the 210 toa hospital via helicopter.48 The BLUES NOVEMBER ‘25

The eastbound lanes of the210 Freeway between MountainAvenue and Campus Avenue arecurrently closed as a result ofthe accident, according to theCalifornia Highway Patrol.Dicus said that the departmentwas working to identify and interviewthe suspect and that heanticipated releasing his nameto the public within the next 24hours.The Sheriff’s Departmentreleased a statement Mondayevening honoring Nunez’s serviceand extending condolencesto his family, friends and fellowdeputies.“Deputy Nunez served withunwavering commitment, courage,and deep compassion forthe community he vowed toprotect,” stated the department.“His bravery and sacrifice reflecta life dedicated to safeguardingothers, even at the greatest cost.Such devotion will remain foreveretched in our hearts.”Nunez’s death was met with anoutpouring of grief from electedofficials and first responders.“My prayers are with his wife,young daughter, and family,” saidAssemblymember Tom Lackey(R- Palmdale ) in a statement.“His courage and dedication toprotecting others will never beforgotten.”A memorial procession for theslain deputy began around 6:30p.m. as scores of law enforcementpersonnel gathered outsideArrowhead Regional MedicalCenter to salute Nunez’s bodyas it was carried outside of thebuilding.
