GUEST COMMENTARY Y Sgt. Michael Barron Have we Flocked ourselves? We shouldn't abuse a technology to the point i that the public doesn't trust us with it. There’s debate taking place across America about the growing use of ALPR’s (automated license plate readers), in particularly Flock cameras. Whenever government collects information about where people travel, Americans start asking questions. Who has access to the information? How long is it kept? What safeguards prevent abuse? And what happens if the technology falls into the wrong hands? What is law enforcement abuses it? Those are fair questions. But there is another question we must ask: What happens when we refuse to use technology that could help police prevent crime, identify dangerous criminals and bring justice to victims? For law enforcement, the answer is painfully simple: another victim. Flock cameras were never intended to be a replacement for good police work. They are just another tool in the toolbox. Like fingerprints, DNA, surveillance video and NCIC records. All technology that can provide investigators with critical pieces of information that may otherwise be impossible to obtain. 22 The BLUES SEPTEMBER ‘26 Imagine a child is abducted. A violent suspect flees a crime scene with the child. He’s wanted for murder and crosses county lines. He steals a vehicle and commits a robbery with the child in the back seat.
